The Norfork tailwater below Norfork Dam. Cold, clear water with trophy brown and rainbow trout, one of Arkansas's premier trout fisheries. The river tops out around 12 ft. The contours are modeled from the water's real shoreline and maximum depth. Treat them as a rough guide, and never use them for navigation. Here's the year, species by species, as the scoring engine sees it.
The outline encloses 4,815 acres, worked by 140.1 miles of shoreline. The 14.4 development index tells the story — a convoluted bank whose fishable edge far outruns the acreage. Every acre of it sits shallower than ~15 ft: one big littoral zone, cover and forage throughout. Call it 41.4 mi long by 6.5 mi wide at the broadest reach. Ozark County claims this one. Its nearest charted neighbour, Norfork Lake, is 6 mi to the south.
Start shallow in spring: brown trout sit in 1 to 12 ft that time of year. They don't go far with the seasons — 4 to 12 ft covers summer, 2 to 12 ft covers winter. The spot to know is Current seam (mile 0.6), a current seam in about 7 ft of water that rates prime for brown trout in summer. Warm-month bites cluster around after dark and early morning. Throw a spoon at the thermocline or a deep stickbait (night) until the fish tell you otherwise.
| Season | Depth | Best window | Start at | Go-to baits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | 1 to 12 ft | dawn & dusk | Dawt Mill Pond Dam tailrace (10 ft) | Stickbait off planer boards (shallow), Small spoon along mud lines |
| Summer | 4 to 12 ft | night & dawn | Current seam (mile 0.6) (7 ft) | Spoon at the thermocline, Deep stickbait (night) |
| Fall | 2 to 12 ft | dusk & dawn | Dawt Mill Pond Dam tailrace (10 ft) | Jerkbait over gravel, Casting spoon |
| Winter | 2 to 12 ft | dawn | Dawt Mill Pond Dam tailrace (10 ft) | Jigging spoon, Small stickbait (slow) |
Come spring, look for rainbow trout tight to the bank in 3 to 12 ft. Through summer count on 3 to 12 ft; the winter hold is 2 to 12 ft. If you only fish one area, make it Current seam (mile 0.6): a current seam around 7 ft that scores prime in spring. Best bite is early morning and the evening. A dodger + spoon (deep troll) or a flutter spoon is the honest summer answer here.
| Season | Depth | Best window | Start at | Go-to baits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | 3 to 12 ft | dawn & dusk | Current seam (mile 0.6) (7 ft) | Inline spinner (silver), Small spoon |

| Fall | 3 to 12 ft | dawn & dusk | Current seam (mile 0.6) (7 ft) | Casting spoon, Jerkbait over shoals |
| Winter | 2 to 12 ft | dawn | Current seam (mile 0.6) (7 ft) | Jigging spoon, Tube jig (white) |
