Kartalla Karijärvi kattaa 2 145 hehtaaria, rantaviivaa 55.5 km. Rantaviiva on voimakkaasti rikkonainen (indeksi 3.4) — lahtia ja niemiä kaikkialla, mikä moninkertaistaa kalastettavan reunan. Noin 39% pinnasta on matalampaa kuin ~5 m — siellä ruokaketju elää. Päästä päähän vesi mittaa noin 10.1 km, leveimmillään 5.5 km. Vesi sijaitsee alueella Kouvolan seutukunta. Lähin kartoitettu vesi on Maajärvi, 4.8 km itään.
