How to use this ranking
The order is a map-planning ranking, not a claim about today's fish population. It favors larger mapped waters and gives survey-backed contours a three-times data-quality boost. Agency population surveys, current regulations, access and recent conditions should make the final decision.
When to fish kokanee in New Mexico
- Spring 10–30 ft — Schools roam the upper column over open water while it's cool — short leaders, slow trolls.
- Summer 30–70 ft — Kokanee compress into the 50-55°F band at the thermocline over the deepest basins — precise depth is everything.
- Fall 5–40 ft — Spawners turn crimson and gang up off tributary mouths and gravel shorelines; remaining fish scatter with turnover.
- Winter 20–80 ft — Deep suspended schools — an electronics game through the ice.
